Position Summary:

Research Computing Systems (RCS), in the UAF Geophysical Institute (GI), is looking for a System Support Specialist to provide researcher assistance, linux system administration, and Windows/PC or Mac workstation support as part of our team of research cyberinfrastructure analysts and engineers. We are a dynamic group of IT professionals supporting a core set of cyberinfrastructure services for a wide variety of UAF research projects, as well as developing and maintaining specific systems for researchers. RCS team members work together as well as independently to ensure researchers have high performing and adaptable network, storage, compute, web, and hosted systems and services they can depend on to conduct their research. You will work with team members to support many researchers and their projects at a premier research institution, and enhance crucial research cyberinfrastructure services. Duties:

45Systems Administration and Services Support: Develop and maintain a baseline of expertise required to support systems/services and participate in on-call rotation. Perform day-to-day systems/services status reviews and troubleshooting. Document causes of failure and resolution of those failures. Quantify systems/services utilization trends. Report statistics to management. Install and update user software as requested. Ensure systems are secured and used in accordance with organizational policies and procedures . Recommend alternate options or changes to RCS systems/services to improve and meet researchers’ needs. Provide support for GI researchers’ and staff workstations and peripherals. Utilize RCS tools and processes (wiki, JIRA, team meetings, etc.) for reporting and documenting system and user updates/issues. Maintain up-to-date system procedures that can be followed by system, storage and network staff as required. Participate in scheduled outages through planning and executing work in the data center. Assist or provide guidance to researchers and staff with questions/issues including problem diagnosis. Maintain technical currency and awareness of technological advances relating to RCS systems/services.Essential
5Research and Planning: Attend conferences, workshops, seminars, classes as time and budget allow. Complete online training through Pluralsight and other services. Track industry trends and share information concerning new technologies of interest. Evaluate and report on new technologies of interest. Work with organization and other units to research and/or implement new technologies.Essential
50Researcher Support and Communication: Coordinate and provide technical and administrative support including service desk triage via email/phone/in-person, workstation maintenance, network connectivity, projects database updates, monitoring and fulfilling account and project requests. Consult with researchers and staff regarding Research Computing Systems (RCS) capabilities and procedures. Respond to inquiries regarding RCS systems/services and research information technology trends. Instruct researchers on access to or operation of RCS systems/services. Provide adequate prior notification for planned system/service impacts to normal operations. Track, evaluate, and modify internal and external RCS web content to update current events and document changes to RCS systems/services. Make recommendations for major content changes or systems/services upgrades.Essential

Required Experience & Education:

Bachelors of Science in Computer Science, Information Technology, Software Development, or a science research field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

1-3 years of professional Linux, OS X, or Windows systems administration or an equivalent combination of education and experience.



Salary Information:

This position is full-time, Grade 80, term-funded, exempt, 12-month position complete with a competitive salary and UA employee benefits package. New hires will be placed on the UA staff salary schedule, based on education and experience.
